From its garage beginnings, the brand that Bill May founded in 1946 has gone on to meet the challenges of small scale manufacturing and produce over 200 guitar models. The Maton brand is known throughout the world and played by many high profile artists in a range of genres.

Australia's leading guitar manufacturer began in a Melbourne backyard workshop in 1946 when jazz musician and woodwork teacher Bill May formed the Maton Musical Instruments Company with his older. Maton Musical Instruments Company is a 100% family owned Australian company based in Melbourne and best known for its handmade Maton Guitar range. The Maton name is a derivative of the words 'May' and 'Tone'. Bill May opened Australia's first major guitar making facility in Canterbury in 1949.
